After graduating from Emory University School of Law, where she was an Earl Warren Scholar, and completing a prestigious federal clerkship in the United States District Court, Hatchett—a graduate of Mt. Holyoke College—spent nearly 10 years at Delta Air Lines, where she was the airline’s highest-ranking African-American woman. In her dual roles as Senior Attorney and Public Relations Manager, she represented Delta in labor/personnel and antitrust litigation and commercial acquisitions and supervised global crisis management and handled media relations for 50 U.S. cities as well as Europe and Asia. Her contributions led to recognition as one of the “100 Best and Brightest Women in Corporate America” by Ebony magazine.
Hatchett was admitted to the Georgia Bar in 1977 and was admitted to the Bar of the District of Columbia in 1980.
Appointed Chief Presiding Judge of the Fulton County (Atlanta, Georgia.) Juvenile Court in 1990—becoming the first African-American Chief Presiding Judge of a state court and head of one of the largest juvenile court systems in the country—Hatchett continued to be involved in charting the direction of several companies.
Hatchett presides over the two-time Emmy nominated nationally syndicated show, Judge Hatchett, now in its 9th season (Sony Pictures Television). Judge Hatchett, won a Prism Award for Best Unscripted Non-Fiction Series or Special for Television.
From 2000 to 2006, Hatchett sat on the board of directors for HCA Inc., where she was the chair of the Ethics, Compliance and Quality of Care Committee, which was charged with reviewing company matters related to ethics and compliance functions, the scope and results of the company’s ethics and compliance procedures, and policies and procedures related to the delivery of quality medical care to patients and patient safety. She was also a member of the HCA board’s Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee, which considered, investigated and recommended qualified candidates to the board of directors and reviewed and recommended HCA’s corporate governance policies.
In addition, Hatchett was a member of the five-person special board committee that negotiated HCA’s leveraged buyout. In November 2006, shareholders overwhelmingly approved a $32.7-billion leveraged buyout of the company, paving the way for the nation’s largest for-profit hospital chain to go private. The buyout, including debt, surpassed the previous leveraged buyout record of $31 billion, which Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts & Co. paid for RJR Nabisco in 1989.
From 1999 to 2004, while a board director for The Gap Inc., Hatchett sat on the Governance, Nominating and Social Responsibility Committee, which assisted the board in fulfilling its oversight responsibilities relating to the company’s corporate governance matters, including the development of corporate governance guidelines, periodic evaluation of the board, its committees and individual directors, identification and selection of director nominees, oversight of the company’s policies and practices relating to social and environmental issues, and such other duties as directed by the board of directors. She also held a position on the Compensation and Management Development
Committee responsible for overseeing officer and director compensation, succession planning for senior management, and development and retention of senior management.
From 1999-2002, Hatchett also served as an at-large member of the board at The ServiceMaster Co.
Currently, Hatchett sits on the National Football League’s Atlanta Falcons’ board of directors, a position she has held since 2004. Most recently in 2007 she joined the Boys and Girls Clubs of America National Board of Governors, the Board of Advisors for Play Pumps International, the Leadership Circle for the After School Alliance and the Advisory Board for the Women’s Resource Center at Spelman College. Since 1996 she has served as a consultant to the National Basketball Association.
Hatchett is the Founder and CEO of the newly established production company, Great Day Productions that specializes in television programming. Hatchett is a legal contributor on national news outlets including, CNN and FOX News and The TODAY SHOW and is the author of the National Best Seller, Say What You Mean, Mean What You Say (Harper Collins 2003). In the midst of a demanding legal, corporate and media career that has spanned over 25 years, Hatchett has been a recipient of numerous awards, including the Outstanding Jurist of the Year Award from the National Bar Association; the Roscoe Pound Award for Outstanding Work in Criminal Justice from the National Council on Crime and Delinquency; the Making a Difference for Women Award from the National Council for Research on Women; the Outstanding Community Service Award from the Spelman College Board of Trustees and the NAACP’s Thurgood Marshall Award. Hatchett serves as the national spokesperson for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), a non-profit volunteer organization that trains volunteers to represent abused and neglected children.
A frequent lecturer throughout the country, in 2009 she keynoted Black Enterprise’s Entrepreneurs Conference. Hatchett in 2006 was the closing keynote speaker at the Office Depot’s Success Strategies for Businesswomen Conference, keynoted the WOW Facts Diversity Conference in the U.S. Senate and moderated the CEO Forum on Diversity Leadership. Hatchett was a guest faculty member lecturing on the topic of corporate ethics at the University of Vanderbilt Directors College presented by the Law School and the Owen Graduate School of Management.
Hatchett was named Distinguished Alumna at Mt. Holyoke College, which later granted her an honorary degree. Her other alma mater, Emory University Law School, named her Outstanding Alumni of the Year. Emory University also presented her with the highest award given to university alumni, the Emory Medal. She is the mother of two young adult sons and currently resides in Atlanta, GA.
